Nod Brook WMA 04/13

I didn't want to waste a beautiful afternoon, so I decided to check out the ponds at Nod Brook WMA. I didn't have much luck finding largemouth bass in the lower (i.e., north) pond the last time I was there and wanted to check out the shallow pond to the west of it. It was sunny and warm, and there was just an occasional slight wind. I launched in the shallow pond at 12:45 pm. It's already filling in with weeds and green slime: [img:1aa27065e5]http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5595/img1956o.jpg[/img:1aa27065e5] I tried throwing a four inch curlytail grub on a 3/8 ounce shakeyhead jighead, but there were too many weeds for it. I was still feeling optimistic, so I swapped out the grub jig for a white buzzbait. Nope, it was too weedy and slimy for that, too. I decided to switch to my other setup, which had a Pearl Silver Gulp! Minnow on a 1/16 ounce round jighead. On the first cast with it, I caught a small sunny: [img:1aa27065e5]http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/508/img1957b.jpg[/img:1aa27065e5] A couple of casts later, I caught a dinky chain pickerel: [img:1aa27065e5]http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/4515/img1958h.jpg[/img:1aa27065e5] Over the next 30 minutes, I caught four more small sunnies and another dinky chain pickerel. But I could handle only so much fun, so I decided to get off of the shallow pond and head over to the lower pond. I launched on the north end at 1:45 pm and headed down the channel. I swapped out the white buzzbait for the grub jig, but didn't get any hits on it. As I headed south along the west shore, I heard a splash in the shallows, so I threw the minnow jig at it and boated a small black crappie: [img:1aa27065e5]http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/5504/img1960r.jpg[/img:1aa27065e5] I continued around the pond, but didn't get any more bites on either the minnow jig or the grub jig until I got the the southeast corner, where the minnow jig got me another small black crappie. After that, the bite was on with the minnow jig. I ended up catching 20 crappie, nine sunnies and eight largemouth bass. I caught the last four largemouth bass with a white 3/8 ounce Strike King Redeye spinnerbait. The biggest two of the largemouth bass were each only 14 inches long: [img:1aa27065e5]http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/6232/img1961h.jpg[/img:1aa27065e5] [img:1aa27065e5]http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/1493/img1964ug.jpg[/img:1aa27065e5] I got off of the water at 5:30 pm. I'm pretty glad that I didn't waste the afternoon.

No matter what you catch, it's the thrill of the unknown that's fun. Glad someone was able to fish today. I'm heading out tomorrow morning

Nice way to spend this day! I got out for about an hour on the Derby res but only caught 2 LMB each about 8" on a dropshot, wasn't even worth writing up a report. Hopefully i'll make out good heading to lilli in the AM with the kayak
