Subject:
Maltby Lakes (dont eat the bullhead!)
Message:
Decided to give this place another shot after hearing some good reports this year and getting a 3+lb fish after stopping quick a week ago.
No boats, only shore access. I hit Lake #2, fished a small relatively deep inlet. Crossed a makeshift stick bridge to an island that looked very promising. Rock drop offs, submerged veg, blow downs. Then WORKED the shore opposite the pump house back to the parking lot.
I got 3 fish. All dinks. The biggest one might have been approaching 3 lbs. This was in the span of 6 hours. I threw drop shots, spinnerbaits, cranks, jerks, craws, texas rigs, jigs, WACKY SENKOS!!!! I usually save these for a last resort when Im not getting bit on ANYTHING else.....I swear.....weeeeelll sometimes I...nevermind.
and I had to WORK for the 3 I got. The fish were very close to shore under shade from overhanging trees. They were mixed up with bluegill which were EVERYWHERE and AGRESSIVE!
What kind of self respecting bass would allow himself to be surrounded by a gang of bluegill!!!! and not devouring them!! like they are friends!!!!
They werent even afraid. sad.
But alas, I decided to throw the senko one more time in Lake #2 right at the entrance. Let it sink. Start to lift. I got a fish! and its a nice one! finally, a respectable bass!
nope.
a diseased bullhead.
what is that? looks painful. Looks like I will NOT be eating any Maltby cats this year. They just stocked them in that lake this year I believe.
Thinking of sending the pics to the DEP inland fisheries dept in case its a contagious disease. The last thing we need is scarce, tiny, diseased bass.
Complete opposite of yesterday. I was slaying them at Saltonstall. The fish were the strongest Ive felt in a while. Ripping line off my reel and doing these deep long runs at the boat. All 4ish lbers.
Thats the difference between the Malt and the Salt I guess....
I wont totally give up yet. Someone please go there and show me a 5lb bass. I will give you $20. It is a nice place. 3 lakes, looks like great bass habitat, plenty of forage, tons of good shore access if you dont m,ind a little hiking.....
anyway, on with the pics.
a "big" bass at the malt. someone prove me wrong. please.

The catfish they put into Maltby Lakes this year were the albino channel cats. Bullheads are more of a natural fish to those lakes.

OK. I never caught one there before this one. I dont fish for them though. There is a new sign up with details about channel and bullhead cats.
it might be fun to catch a big one. This guy didnt put up too much of a fight, he was heavy but didnt run too much. Understandable, he's not in the best of shape.
