Salmon river TMA
Message:
Hi all,
Looking for info if Salmon river is still fly fishing well ??
Any tips on flies and sizes will be appriciated.
Local stuff I normally do Willimantic & Natchaug getting very low water levels and possibly fished out or close. Or my skill level stinks . ( most likely the later ) .
Also I met a guy named Charlie at the Salmon river Friday night 6/8, If any of you know him ( or Charlie is reading this ) I would like to get in touch with Him. He fishes with his son and I met him at the last pool downstream where the FLY fish only TMA runs out . Pool above the waterfall.

Hi,
Use to live very near the Salmon River for over 13 years. So I fished it alot!
It is known as a "green" river.
Many flies dry, wet, nymphs, and streamers with various shades of green/olive color have always worked well to good.
Sizes from #20 up to #16 is what I found to work.
An exception is when a sulfur fly hatch is on. Then almost all the river pools become a feeding frenzy.
The river is also known as pocket water type. Fish will hang in front and back of the large mid-river rocks which have holes scoped out just in front and back of them.
Expect short drifts near these rocks as the water swirls quickly around them.
But that is where the bigger fish will stake their territory.
The river gets a very good Fall stocking.
If you have further questions about it, I'd be happy to try and answer them!

The river is very low but there are still fish to be had. Fishing has been tough for the last week, at least in the fly section. The heat over the next few days coupled with low water may become dangerous to fish survival . Look for the deep pools.
