I would stay away from both those spots on a weekend with the little guy and a 14 footer. BIG boats, yahoos and too much beer. Launch from 4 mile or Pleasure Beach as long as the seas are flat you can catch scup close by. I usually drift for scup to cover more water but it will probably be easier to anchor with your son. 4 mile (Old Lyme) leads you out into a bay and head right for the 2 rock islands (the Brothers) anchor up and drop down about 1in of sandworm on a hook with 3-4 oz of lead. Let it sit right on the bottom. To cover more water you can use a spinning rod and cast out a bit and slowly drag it back to you. Pleasure Beach is in Waterford and leads you into Jordans Cove. There are rock piles across the bay (High Rock) and you can anchor up there in about 20fow and fish for porgy. High rock is visible but there is another one south of it as well that is under water, they both should hold fish. I hope this helped. Good luck and have fun.

I agree with ripline. The Ct River will be filled with boats and will make fishing with a youngster in a small boat unpleasant to say the least. I just want to add that be aware 4 Mile River launch can be difficult to use in low water as its very shallow. Just avoid, say an hour on either side of dead low. The Brothers is a close , safe area to fish.
