Lake Basile 06/30

After DirtyDawg10 (aka Derek) and I left the Farmington River, I still felt the need to set a hook on some fish, so I headed straight to Lake Basile. I parked at the end of Lordship Road, attached my kayak cart to El Haba�ero, loaded up my gear and schlepped everything down the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail to the lake: [img:06344bf459]http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/756/img2919c.jpg[/img:06344bf459] [img:06344bf459]http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/721/img2916k.jpg[/img:06344bf459] When I launched at 1:45 pm, the air was still freaking hot (aka in the mid-90s), the sun was still blazing and there was still only a slight breeze. I started throwing a Bullfrog patterned Zoom Horny Toad over the shallow weeds on the west shore. I got a hit right away and set the hook on a typical little Lake Basile largemouth bass: [img:06344bf459]http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/8781/img2886cropped.jpg[/img:06344bf459] Man, that felt good! :D I continued to throw the Horny Toad over the shallow weeds and got a lot of hits, but most were short strikes on which I didn't even try to set the hook. Small fish kept tearing up the Horny Toad; I hate it when they bite the feet off of it. :evil: It took 17 minutes and a few Horny Toads before I caught another fish, so I switched to a wacky rigged green pumpkin/red flake five inch Senko to increase my hookup rate. For the rest of the day, I nibbled around the clear water in and around the weedbeds, and switched back to the Horny Toad in the heavy weeds and pads. All told, I caught about 30 largemouth bass. In fact, I saw only one shore fisherman while I was there. I'm glad that I was able to get the catching dozens of largemouth bass thing out of my system. Now, I'm going to focus on catching a big one. :D
