West Haven 7/1

Chris and I did some late night fishing out at West Haven Beach Sunday. We arrived around 10:45pm and fished til 12:45am. High tide for New Haven Harbor was schedule for 9:57pm. Chris tried throwing a Jimmy's plug, Bomber Long A, Yo Zuri Crystal Minnow, Red Fin, and a few custom New England poppers. He didn't get any signs of life. Lures I played around with included shiner Shallow Shad Rap SSR-9, blue sardine Saltwater X-Rap SXR-10, chrome Skitter Pop SP-9, purpledescent Flat Rap FLR-10, and chrome Storm Shallow Thunder Crank. When the water was still high, I had a small bump bump on the SSR-9 as I worked it slow. Later with that lure I saw a "wave" in front of me right behind the lure. When I took the lure out of the water there was a swirl. I was guessing a smart striper of a good size. Even though the conditions were good, I'd say timing as for tide was the reason why we didn't get into anything. Bugs were a pain out there while on land. 2 nice things were the bright moon and seeing lightning in the clouds over Long Island.
