Kings Island 7/1

Hit the river from the Kings Island boat launch in Enfield on Sunday after cleaning up from my daughters' sleep over, camp out birthday party. This area is close to home. For those of you who have never been there I will describe the area. The area is known for Smallmouth Bass as that is 96 percent of what we catch and target. Have yet to see or hear anyone catching a Largemouth bass there.
From the boat launch north on the Enfield side the boat launch is shallow and rocky and hard to get a big boat in there. As you travel north from the launch it is shallow rocky bottom to start then gets less rocky as you go on the Enfield side. Fishing is not as good on this side.
As you cross to the Suffield side hit the deep channel which is usually calm water. North on the Suffield side, again shallow rocky area with more smallies found and caught on this side then the other. As you head north the current picks up and you will see three rocky islands, which I believe were once had supports for a bridge. Around these islands is fast water and holds some pretty good fish, the problem is depending on the water flow it is hard to get to them safely.
South from the boat launch you will see four islands, one close to the launch, the second and third are further southwest and are behind each other north south wise. The fourth in Kings Island which is about a mile long. The water around the islands is shallow and faster and I would caution going on the west side of Kings Island due to it being shallow and fast.
Fishing around the second and third islands and in between them is usually good. There is deep water in the channel as well as very shallow water. Now to my report.
My neighbor and his buddy were already on the water when I arrived at 12:27 AM. The temp was in the 90s with clear skies. I began to paddle to where my friends were on Suffield side north of the launch and trolled my F-7 gold Rapala and on my way at about 12:37 I caught a short.

I spoke to the some guys who were heading home and they said they caught about fifteen each mostly shorts. On top water and just under the surface, north of the ramp near the islands, all in fast water, while anchored in their yaks.
I went up past the northern rocky islands in the fast water as I wanted to make it to the islands but the water was too fast. I fished some of the fast water near the Suffield side but without an anchor it was tough as I floated past the good areas fast. I threw a Strike King Frog, white fluke and the F-7 and caught a 1.5 Smallie on the F-7

Went down around the islands south of the boat launch and threw a SSR perch but nothing. Had to leave at about 2:30 PM due to the storm. My friends caught a few big ones in between the first and and second islands in the faster water.
If you do go here the four islands all have spots to pull your Yaks onto and get out and relax. I hit this area for three hours the Friday before Memorial day and caught 20 as did my neighbor all over a 1.5 pound some were near 3 lbs here are some of the pictures.

Very familiar with where you are fishing. On the Enfield side of the Island is actually good pike fishing. The Southern end of the island on the Enfield side is where there used to be tons of barefoot waterskiers. Heading towards the North it got to be a cove and more slack water. It's actually icefishable and many large pike get pulled out on the ice. I do agree however, very much a smallmouth fishery.
