Bald Eagle sighting on Lake Zoar 7/7
Message:
We were on the boat and got a wonderful view of a large bald eagle on the southern end of Zoar near the Stevenson Dam this past Saturday. Not that it is an extremely rare sighting, as there is an observatory up by the Shepaug Dam, but it is the first one I have seen there in any of the warmer months. What was amazing is I saw the bird diving in the mid day heat between several boats pulling tubes and skiers with a lot of wakes and boat traffic. It was no more than100' away from us. At first I thought it was one of the turkey vultures until I saw the white head and tail feathers. It was around 4pm and there was a front moving in threatening rain again so we were making our way back pretty quickly when we saw it dive just off the River View banquet facility. I slowed the boat just as it splashed down and grabbed what appeared to be a smaller fish. What a cool sight that made my day!

Well, since you brought it up, hoppy (aka Mark) and I got a flyover from a mature bald eagle when we were on Lake McDonough on 07/01:

I've also seen bald eagles on West Branch Reservoir (aka Hogsback), Mount Tom Pond and in Hamburg Cove. It never gets old for me. :D
