Regarding "what baits work the best in spring time", I still haven't figured that out. The answer seems to be "depends". And I don't mean that you have to wear an adult diaper. Laughing I've seen pretty much everything work at one time, lake or river, or another; fast, slow, big and small. From a kayak, in which you tend to fish areas more slowly and thoroughly, slower-action lures like wacky-rigged Senkos have been working well for me, lately. Very light jigs (i.e., 1/16 ounce or 1/32 ounce) have also been good, because they don't dig down into the still mostly dead weed cover when they hit the bottom.

I guess I'm suggesting that you try everything and anything, until you figure out what's working. Wink But, as anyone who knows me would tell you, I'd try a wacky-rigged Senko, first. Very Happy Here's some kayaking fishing porn from the last week:

Which section of Bolton did you catch those? I've noticed the fishing at Lower Bolton has been improved lately....when it stays healthy

Sorry, I didn't catch those at any of the Bolton lakes. I was responding to the question about which lures are working, right now.

The 5-0 and 4-11 largemouth bass were caught in my local pond with wacky-rigged five inch Senkos. I caught a 4-8, yesterday, also with a wacky-rigged Senko. The channel cat was caught with a drop shot 2-1/2 inch Gulp! Minnow, just upriver from the mouth of the Mattabessett. All of the lures were fished slowly and the bites were very gentle. I've caught a lot of smaller fish with 2-1/2 inch Gulp! Minnows on small 1/16 ounce jigheads, using a slow steady retrieve with twitches. If you want to catch black crappie without using a bobber, an even smaller 1/32 ounce jighead is a good option.

The point I was trying to make is that faster moving lures often also work at this time of year. If I were in the mood for casting and retrieving, I'd definitely tie on a lipless crankbait or a chatterbait with a trailer. And now that the water temperatures are hitting the mid to upper 50s, I will be test throwing topwater soft plastic Zoom Horny Toads. Remember, it's only too early to throw a frog until it isn't!

I was on Lillinonah this past weekend and the only time I could get bit was with a jerkbait using long pauses and they would hit on the first twitch after the pause. A friend of mine went back the next day and did very well using a jig. I now to get to look forward to fishing the river this weekend Confused and what a joy that will be I'm sure with the water being so high. As far as fishing Bolton goes, I live in Manchester so fishing Bolton is real easy for me. I go to Lower and usually do well with a 5" wacky rigged senko or a zoom super hog on a 1/4" weight pretty much anywhere on the lake

One Ounce Brown Jig taken last week in a lake in North West Ct. Try different techniques. Small spider grubs on 1/4 oz jig heads work well for cold water smallies.

I fish Bolton a lot. This time of year I use Wacky rigged as Phil says. Also some tubes and swim jigs. In terms of which of the lakes. Middle will produce plenty of bass. Upper has some large fish but it requires more patience. The weeds can be rough to deal with but worth it when you pull something outta there.
