Hi All!

While perusing some other ice fishing forums, I read posts of some people bragging about sneaking out on private waters to fish.

A couple even had the gall to say that it might be worth the risk Exclamation

Any way you cut it THAT'S POACHING Exclamation Evil or Very Mad

Anyone considering doing that is NOT A SPORTSMAN but a CHEATER Exclamation

Better to ask politely and get permission or an invite -> Then to be a SNEAK, CHEATER, and POACHER Exclamation

After getting my Mass. license today I went over to see the owner of a private pond there and asked him for permission to ice fish it -> AND GOT IT Exclamation

I would be surprised that a person(s) would allow a person who then are unfamiliar with fish their pond due to insurance reasons do tot he chance of the angler falling in..

Best thing to do as a landowner is have the fisherman sign a waiver. That way the landowner is not liable if something happens. That's what we do on the estate I work on in Litchfield for hunters, fisherman and photographers.

In Connecticut there is a state statute that says a land owner cannot be held liable if he allows people on his land for outdoor recreational puposes

My boss/ landowner can be kinda paranoid so they have them still sign a waiver for their records.

The Connecticut Recreational Use Statute seems pretty clear to me but, unfortunately, at least one lower court judge has low reading comprehension and has found liability where it really isn't. Hopefully, Connecticut's higher courts will quash his ruling and ensure the availablity of open land for recreational purposes.
