I was on the river in Portland accross from Cromwel for a few hrs into the night. I was goin for stripers off the bottom but not much was happening. They were rising all over the place but i didnt have anything to throw at them so next time ill be more prepaired after a stop to Cabelas for some plugs. But my buddy managed to pull out a nice 2 lb smallmouth by the end. Didnt have my camra. Next time.

Were you out on the main river by the portland bridge right by Rt9 there? I've always looked at that spot and wanted to get out there for smallies.

HW, ..Portland is on the opposite side of the river from where the Mattabasset empties in.

That's right. I don't know the river well at all. I've fished it once maybe twice. I have no clue as to where to go

Speaking of the Matabasset, has anybody fished there? or where it empties into the CT River, and if so, was it productive? Thinking about trying it out, as well as where the Farmington meets the river, if anyone has any info on that as well, I'm interested to hear it.

My personal experience is limited and it's been a couple of years since I've been there but the Mattabasset suposedly has some very big pike and smallies in it. I can vouch for the pike personally, but I've only caught 2 smallies from there and both were small! It is a pretty deep section before it empties into the CT River, and you can navigate back for a very long ways up it! I've seen a fair number of guys fishing from shore but I have no Idea how they got to there,..especially the ones on the northern side of the river!!

Note: Some of those guys looked like the type that you do not want to mess with,...I'd be pretty hesitant to get very far back into the woods around there if you're going alone! Wink

ive fished the matabasset a few times last year and i does produce some large pike i got a 36'' out of there (steel leaders r a must i cant count how many lures i lost) but as far as where it empties into the ct river i dont know much about it cause it looked hard to get to from shore.

FYI if you decide to park by that geto seafood place off 9 lock ur car and watch out for the homeless guys living in the woods out of tents too.

Good to know, I do know that part of that river goes right through the projects of middletown, not a place I'd like to be. But maybe I'll try right at the mouth, if you say there's pike, I'm all over it! Thanks Cool

Are there spots in Berlin to fish the Mattabbaset? I've tried following it,but I can't find any pull-offs or anything. The only place I can think of is where it empties. I think you get off the exit just before the bridge exit on rt9 south
