I am going to be on spring break from March 10th to 17th, and looking to plan a trip onto the river in search for some white perch or early schoolies.

I have never fished for white perch before so if anyone can mind showing me how its done, i have a spot in my boat for you.

Hi,

White Perch? -> I've always used a white jig tipped with 1/2 a crawler.

You have to try the coves on the Ct. river as that is where you'll find schools hanging out.
Hamburg Cove is well known for White Perch.

What do they relate to in terms of structure; near current, slow water?

Fished under a bobber Jigged in the water column, on the bottom?

I love catching white perch. For a small fish they have a lot of fight in them. Fun to catch on a light setup. I catch them on small minnow colored crankbaits but small jigheads with a grub on them supposedly work well too.

I'd love to head down to Hamburg Cove with you. Just say when. We could carpool down there.

Little jigs seem to work best when bounced along the bottom. Hamburg Cove is shallow, so it's easy to fish even from a kayak. We'd need a bucket that's big enough to hold 30 keepers for each of us. Very Happy

Heck, Michael and I were killing them from shore on Nightcrawlers last weekend. If you ever need a fishing partner on that boat for stripers Ill almost always be available on weekends or nights.

As Fishfiner stated, the 2 of us were killing them at the estuary cove at O'Sullivans Island in Derby.

Nightcrawlers on the bottom with no weight is the trick. A small panfish jig or soft plastic bounced on the bottom might work too.
