Shad is just a big alewive. You can catch them in the CT river and tributories in the spring when they migrate the river to spawn. They've been referred to as "the poor man's salmon" as they fight great on light tackle and jump. They can get upwards to 7lbs. Can be caught using willow leafs and shad darts.
