Part II.-

I stop by to see marc and we decide to do a little trout fishing in the afternoon at a friend of his' stream. I went and picked up some worms and hooks etc and head home to warm up a bit. Lateron I get a call from Marc that he can't make it, so I decide to take the worms to a place I've seen guys catching trout on the hous before. This is where the mayhem begins.

I arrive to find the normal route down the steep bank has been destroyed by someone dumping topsoil and cut down shrubbery and tree stumps, but a new route has been formed. I swing down the bank to a place where there are two trees growing out from the vertical (for about 2 feet) face of the trail. I put a my right foot on one and it promply slips off it. I go nuts first into the tree and get swung around and land on my back next to the river. Less than comfortable, but I didn't want kids anyway. The river was beautiful just after the rain:

First cast with a worm yielded a fish that lodged itself in the stumps that had been freshly dumped, and the line snapped. Retie and fresh worm yields another dink smallie. I thought it was weird because I'd NEVER caught a smallmouth there, so I figured why not, I hate worms anyhow and went to a bigger torpedo.

Nailed a nice 1 and a half pounder on my ultralight, which was just a blast.

Next cast I hear a plop in the water about ten feet out and look down to see that the spool on my ultralight has gone flying somehow into the water. I pull off all the line and get the spool back only to find everything still attached to it, drag mechanism, you name it. I go back up and grab my normal setup as all my line is now knotted from the loss of the spool in the river.

I head back down and cast again, and pull in another good smallie, just as I get him to shore, he flips and snaps the line. Dur. At least he was on shore already so I unhooked him and let him go. Rerigged the line and was just about to cast when I realized I'd screwed up the rigging (double wrapped around the bail). Undid the mess and casted again.

I cast the torpedo out and hear a plop of the lure hitting, a second later followed by a splash. I figure "wow the fish are agressive today" and then notice that NO, I had CAUGHT A BLUEBIRD IN THE LINE. This sucked massively.

I reel in the bird who manages to flop enough to get the lure stuck on the stumps. I cut the line above it and manage to get the bird out, which, if there's one saving grace, at least it was alright. Decided I wasn't going to lose the lure so I took off my socks and shoes and waded out to get it. I actually managed to NOT fall into the river, so that's a plus. I decided that was enough damage for one day and packed it in, after releasing all the remaining worms.

Sweet Jesus what a day, the only worse luck I could have had would be to hit a deer and then get ticketed by the police for having a headlight out, which I really thought was still gonna happen until I was parked and safely out of my car.

All in all, an amusing day, and one which will not soon be forgotten.

Do you ever turn over rocks and find crayfish to use as bait? It works real well!!

They are fast though. Bring a small bait bucket and spend an hour catching them. Toss one out tail hoked and watch out !!!

Farmington riv is a bit of a hike for us, but if it's for guaranteed fish... I think an afternoon road trip could be arranged! You have luck using phoebes or anything? or just straight nightcrawlers?

I just started fishing that spot this year,Ive been a bunch of times and have never been skunked, the section of the river I fish is a T.M.A... so barbless hooks and c&r only.The heaviest trout I caught was 2lb 2oz.I only use night crawlers and so do my friends, so Im not sure what else works,most ppl. are fly fishing on that river,but crawler fishing works great! your never waiting long for bites,cast out watch slack line for movement,once your line moves down stream from cast and has no more slack, reel in and repeat.Ill post how we do tomorrow,how many of us,start and stop time, and quality & quanity of fish caught.Then you can decide if its worth the trek for ya.
