Together with Open House on April 21 from 1 p.m. 3 p.m., West Cove Marina announces its tournament schedule for 2013. Members, renters, and guests will open the season with a striped bass tournament on June 8. On July 27 there will be a porgy tournament, and the annual bluefish tournament takes place on August 17. The Marina ends its official schedule with a potluck party on August 25.

Visitors to the Marina's Open House will enjoy the views from the clubhouse, refreshments, and conversation with two featured captains. For those interested in fishing for striped bass, recognized expert Eric Fekete will talk about the stripers' migration into Long Island Sound, the best places to look for them, and the best strategies for catching them. Fekete, Quinnipiac University Men's Lacrosse Head Coach, is also well known for community service in his hometown in Cheshire.

Captain Kathy Granfield of West Haven operates Veteran Angler Charters, which offers free fishing trips to disabled veterans of branches of military service. Granfield, an eighth-grade science teacher fishes for striped bass, too, but her motto is "Fishin with a Mission," and her trips on the Sound provide recreational rehabilitation and therapeutic support to veterans.

Both captains dock their boats at West Cove Marina. Established in West Haven shortly after World War II, the marina is cooperatively owned by its members, and many of the Marina's 122 slips are available for sale or for rent. In addition to the comfortable clubhouse with wifi, a kitchen, barbecue area, and an adjacent pool, facilities include a 30-ton travel lift, pumpout station, and catch basin with power wash.
