So I understand that there are some lakes that are closed until opening day. Why is Rainbow Reservoir closed - does anyone know? I checked the anglers guide and according to it, its open all year. Also I checked where I could on the DEP website and didnt see anything. Usually on the weekly fishing report sometimes there will be closings but of course that hasnt been something since Feb 28th.

It was extremely disappointing towing my boat 30 minutes away to find out I couldnt launch there and that it was closed...

Hi,

Rainbow Res. is an impoundment part of the "Lower Farmington River".

Under listing "Lower Farmington River" Anglers Guide -> Rt 177 bridge to Rainbow Dam is listed as trout waters and thus closed till Opening Day.

Below the dam is designated tidal waters and open year round.

Only those waters listed above the Rt. 177 bridge have special year round regulations.

Steve's right, there's an omission in the 2012 Connecticut Angler's Guide in the listing for Rainbow Reservoir. The Inland District Statewide Species Regulations state, in pertinent part:

Quote:
Unless otherwise indicated in the Lakes & Ponds and Rivers & Streams listings:
•Lakes and ponds are open year-round.
•Rivers & streams are open from 6:00 a.m. on the 3rd Saturday in April through the last day of February (Closed to all fishing from March 1st to 6:00 a.m. on the 3rd Saturday in April).

And the Lakes & Ponds listings state, in pertinent part:
Quote:
RAINBOW RESERVOIR, Windsor (240 acres)
Facilities: L
•Species: (LMB SMB S CP YP WP CB BB)
•Other: 35 mph speed limit.

The listing fails to mention that there's a closed season on Rainbow Reservoir.

I'll send an email to the DEEP about this.

Well, guess what? Rainbow Reservoir IS open to fishing year round. The listing for the Lower Farmington River has an error in it. The word "Dam" shouldn't appear:

Quote:
LOWER FARMINGTON RIVER
Farmington to Windsor; From Route 177 bridge in Unionville Center downstream to Rainbow Reservoir Dam.

The Angler's Guide has been wrong for at least the last 13 years! Embarassed

In addition, the boat launch ramp should be open right now, too. The DEEP is looking into that, now.

Thanks Phil. Just wish it was opened yesterday! I drove a ways to get there, and when I got there the gate was closed.

To can thank Steve for this one, Kira. He caught the inconsistency between the Rivers & Streams listing for the Lower Farmington River and the Lakes & Ponds listing for Rainbow Reservoir.

I was right! I knew I was there when everything else was closed and it was open! Don't believe everything you read in the anglers guide (until PECo verifies it)

It's good to know that no one has to wait until opening day to load up on juvenile smallies. Thanks Steve!
