I took the advice from this site and picked up a couple of senkos and some nice hooks. And I love em , they nail fish. But after one cast, the hook pierces right through the senko and the bait is no longer "weedless" its really frustrating. Is there any special way to rig so they stay weedless?

Are you wacky rigging them or Texas rigging them?

I am guessing you are Texas rigging them, as this is really the only way to rig them weedless. I think the action of the bait is better if you can get away with wacky rigging them.

If you want to rig them wacky and weedless, use a hook with a wire weedguard and go to town.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

And yes I was riggin them weightless Texas style... I was afraid to go wacky that it would pull right through slicing the senko.

When using them wacky rigged I've heard of people using rubber o-rings and putting the hook under those to increase the life of the senkos. There are also similar solutions like this:

Stick savers

(Note: no experience with that vendor, just saw a reference to them somewhere)

If you rig them sliding an o ring over the senko, and then put your hook through the o ring, you won't tear them as quickly wacky style.

Are you using the Gary Yamamoto senkos?
Which are very soft and not too durable

If not what brand are you using

Wacky style works great especially for small mouth bass but, for me at least, hooking them up wacky style tends to get hung up more.

If your looking for a good all brass wacky rig tool check out the link below. They also have senkos for less than anybody else.

I don't use to many Gary Yamamoto senkos anymore, only certain colors I can't get elsewhere, for the same reason, they tear too easily. I found a brand called Cinko's made by the Jim Dandy Co., I got them from California Tackle. They are a harder more durable plastic and don't tear as easy in warm water, but I still like the softer senko's in cooler water, they have better action. Fish stix are very good as well, and alot cheaper than senko's too.

If you wacky rig them with an O-ring, I've found that you can go to much smaller hooks and lighter tackle. Sometimes I just take the weight off my dropshot rig and use the little dropshot hook to wacky rig them. It is definitely not weedless,..but it is surprising how well that little hook will come through a lot of cover if you are patient and just kind of ease it along! Also, you almost never miss on the hookset because that skinny little hook penetrates so easily!

Also,..I have no problem getting an O-ring onto a senko without any tools. All you have to do is start it on the skinny end of the worm and it goes right on! You can pull it up onto the fat portion of the worm because as you pull (gently )on the worm it stretches and gets skinnier while it's stretched! (It's even easier if you put some scent on the worm first which I always do anyways! Wink )

ps: I'm 99.99% sure that Kinami's are just senko's which are marketed under a different label by Gary's son,....
I suspect they did it because Walmart wanted some sort of exclusivity contract in order to carry them and Yamamoto didn't want to pull them (senkos) from the shelves of all the little stores that carry them!

A local guy makes senko knock offs at a great price which are very durable. I've been using them for 3 years now and love them.

Here's his web site.

http://www.jigheadslures.com/

He's ready to come out with a 7" one as well but the web site hasn't been updated.

I like the producto lure hot rod worms. They are just like senko's but you can get 20 for 5.75

Mark is right, Kinami is Yamamoto enterprises. and i agree Jighead baitts are just a good in my opnion. i dont throw a senko often at all. just in the spring. you can get 2 times the amount of baits if you go with pappy's recomendations.
