I had been looking for a restaurant that has American shad and shad roe on its menu, and found out that Max's Oyster Bar in West Hartford Center has it as a special:

My daughter and I both tried it, and it was absolutely delicious. I had expected a more oily, fishy tasting fish, like mackerel, but the fish itself is very mild and light, almost like a freshwater fish. The roe is also delicious, but has more of an oily fish flavor, reminiscent of sardines without the salt.

Now, I just have to try it cooked the more traditional Nutmegger way, roasted on a plank with bacon.

Looks like you were doing some mighty fine eating. Thought you were eating dear(roe) and shad at first.
