My friend and i fished silver lake today for about 3 hours testing our luck at catching some channel cats. In the end we caught a total of about 10 and missed 4 or 5. The biggest ended up being 21 inches with 3 from 18-19 inches.

Is there a particular method that you use for catching channel cats?

yeah, i was out there too with a few friends, lost 2 pickerel at the holes and jigged 2 big bluegills. A DEP guy came over doing a survey about what we thought about them stocking the lake with channels cats, we talked to him for a while and he asked about would we prefer a 19'' limit for bass and we all told him it would be great!

Did the DEP guy mean a 12" to 19" slot limit, Dan?

i went out and bought this stuff called big bite chicken blood. its like power but stinks wayyy worse. When i got there, there were people already in my favorite spots so i drilled a couple holes to find the deepest spot in the middle of the lake. I used a chunk about the size of a grape and set it about a foot off of the bottom. Then i also used shiners in the same spot at the same depth. Dead or alive these fish were taking them. But i found the big bite was working better, in fact the first tip up that i set within a matter of 5 seconds i had one.

bowhunter095 - Did the DEP guys ever mention designating Silver Lake as a "Bass Management Lake"?

No, they asked how many times a year i fish the lake, how many times a year i go fishing, if i knew there are channel catfish stocked in the lake, would i consider eating them, how would i rate my success on the lake, etc. Nothing about bass management.

DEP also probably asked you how frequently you participate in tournaments (unless the survey is different in winter.) They will ask the 12"-18" slot limit question at Black Pond though...your answer should be an enthusiastic "hell yeah!" You can also suggest an increased slot limit for bass any time you're surveyed, at any waterbody. If enough people request more trophy bass lakes, then maybe we'll actually get them.

i went back to silver lake today and there wasn't nearly as much action as yesterday. Ended up catching 1 cat fish around 1.5 pounds. I did see two guys pull up a largemouth that i guessed to be between 4 and 5 pounds and i helped another guy land the biggest pickeral i've ever seen that weighed 4 pounds 6 ounces and measured around 27 inches. I eventually moved to a private pond where my friend got a 2 pound 6 ounce largemouth.
