I decided to take a ride over to Curtiss Park in Simsbury and check out the Farmington but the water was way too high and fast. I would have been fighting strong current all day so I moved on to Nod Brook WMA. I arrived there only to find out that the dog trials have started again over there Mad So finally I ended up at Spring pond.

I took my first trip on the yak and it was nice to get out and paddle. The air temp was bearable with the strong sun that was out but the wind was pretty rough. The water temp was about 38 or 39 deg. I paddled to the North end of the pond because I figured the wind would just blow me back South anyway. There were even a few white cap waves out there. I threw my husky suspending jerkbait but it was tough with the wind. I was getting too much speed from the wind so it was near impossible to pause the bait. The other thing I found out is that this lure only dove 2 to 3 feet I'm assuming because in the yak I have to keep the rod tip up. The lure says it dives 4 to 6 ft but I'm guessing that's from a standing position with rod tip down. I also hopped a jig slowly along the bottom for a while but didn't get any bites. Again, it was tough to move slow when the wind was blowing so hard. I need to pick up a small anchor or something. Anyway, it sure was nice to be paddling again and not drilling holes in the ice. I only stayed out for a couple of hours because it was just too windy for the yak. As bad as it sounds I still had a fun time out there.

I checked again and the husky jerk says it dives to a swimming depth of 4' to 8'. Mine wasn't getting anywhere near that depth.

Same here I know exactly what your talking about its the same with all my crankbaits what I assume is that it dives that deep when your burning it through the wter but mine tends to stay at 3' suspended

Good job Dawg. Can't catch them if you don't go out. Let me know what the weekend plans are if any. Keep an eye on the Farmy.

Check to see what the lure is rated to run on, Baits run deeper when fished with braid or floro than they do with mono

@Fishface - I currently have no weekend plans but when I do I'll be sure to let you know.

@Ryan - I fished it on braid with a fluoro leader. I used it today and it seemed to be diving a bit deeper the faster I cranked it but I could never see this lure hitting an 8ft depth...4ft maybe.

I just remembered I posted this question about the husky jerk a while back. I answered my own question and decided to post what I found. I fished a HJ while I was on ZMan's boat a couple weeks back and being able to stand up and fish this bait the way it is supposed to be fished made a huge difference. It is tough to get the bait down while fishing from a kayak in the seated position.
