Hi,

This is interesting to view on a cold day Exclamation

Here are 2 videos of Japanese smelt (Wakasagi) fishing with micro-electric rod/reel unite !

They also fish for pond smelt in groups aboard specially outfitted and heated barges.
You can follow some of these videos on youtube.

thanks to the both of you for the wonderful videos! seadog, are those types of devices even legal in the states? i lived/fished in Houston TX for a couple years and learned about trot lining techniques from the locals. They told me about a device called a yoyo (reel)? It is a coiled reel that springs after a fish runs with it poachers them rigged to their trot lines because they are so effective, turns out they are also illegal. On another note ... my friend here in Berlin invented and patented a bobber that set the hook automatically ... i forget the name if it ... never sold very well.

Hi Jim,

Well I have never read where such rod/reel units are illegale.
They're like any other rod -> just that the micro-reels are motorized.
Since they're not a self setting type unit, I can't see why they wouldn't be legal anywhere here in the states.

Wish we could get a lot more of the Japanese fishing tackle here in the US.
They have a history of fishing for hundreds of years, long before Europeans or us, and make some of the finest tackle here on planet earth.

Guess there are some trade agreements that bar them from doing so here in the US.
Europeans get access to all the good stuff -> Phoooyeeee ! Mad

I'm trying to find some dealers here in the US that do carry Japanese tackle.
I would love to get one of those motorized smelt fishing units.

I hate to thread drift but while we're sharing favorite ice fishing videos:

I think the music makes it. Although I think Godzilla would be a great smelting partner!
