Just curious if any of you plan on catching the squid run up in rhode island this year. I've been going to Newport/Jamestown for the past 3 yrs for it but never heard anyone mention it on here. They are starting to show up in Newport already if anyone cares. If anyone wants up to the minute updates on the squidding, you can go to squidfish.net and click on the newport 08 thread. There's some members that post from their iphones while they're fishing which is pretty cool. If any of you fish for squid, you know the run doesn't last long. Just figured I'd post this info up in case there was any interest.

i go every year squid fishing with Frances Fleets our of RI. Last yr was dead. guess i picked the day wrong. i usually get enough to give to friends & relatives and have some bait for the season.

i think i have every squid jig in all the colors. i try to make a rig that has at least 3 jigs spaced apart and a 1-2 oz weight at the end of the line just to keep it down.

No not new.
It is my understanding that they have been used for eons. The story goes....by hanging weights from the tip of your tackle you increase the length of your leader, therefore increasing the amount of depth gained by the leader causing on occasion, if the conditions are just right, for the fisherman to be able to bottom out. So let me see if i understand this.
If you put it on the end of my leader I can reach depths of unreachable magnitude?

Is that like the black hole theory were matter is so dense it just collapses after it enters?

Yes that is correct.
But keep in mind there is always a thermocline. I prefer to call it spot G or the happy spot. if you will. This is where your not too deep or not too shallow but the conditions are just right for squidding. But be warned if you pull your tackle from the depths too quickly it will surely upset the squid causing it to expel air in quite a noisy fashon. Laughing Laughing
