I've started thinking about the ideal small fishing boat. While I've always been a kayak guy, I'm coming around to the idea that a canoe would be the ideal boat. I especially like the look of those 12 to 15 foot solo canoes that weigh from 14 to 30 pounds. I think you could even stand in some of them. Native, Bell and Wenonah all make some hot little fishing canoes.

What do you think?

Well I have a canoe (1973 aluminum square back 13ft) and I think the grass is always greener on the otherside of the fence. I tihnk they both have their ups and downs and applications. I can stand in mine (if im feeling lucky) but if im by myself it takes a lot of man power to get to the other end of the lake(unless i have my electric motor)....the only upside to a canoe that i can think of is that you have room to put all your crap and maybe a fishing buddy or two......but id love a kayak.........

Without a deck, canoes are lighter. The only problem I have with my Hobie Pro Angler is the mass, all 160+ lbs of it. How much does your canoe weigh? Could you imagine fishing with a double-bladed paddle from a 13 foot canoe that weighs less than 30 lbs?

Phil

Hobie says the Pro Angler is only 138 lbs (yeah, right, only) fully rigged. After you throw the cart wheels and all of your fishing gear on there, I think 150 to 160 lbs is more like it. It handles very well for such a heavy boat, but there are times when I wish it were a lot lighter. The ability to stand up with no tippiness is its best quality. But I'd love to try out a 36 lb canoe on which you could stand, like the Native Ultimate 12 Tegris:

That looks like a sweet canoe, Phil. Are you thinking of getting another woman I mean boat already?

I'm actually thinking about getting a tandem boat of some sort with which I could go paddling or pedaling with my wife. I'm going to try taking her for a cruise on the stern of The Other Woman first, like I've done with my daughter, but would prefer to have her do at least some of the work!

You need to get yourself a family canoe so you your wife and daughter can get out on the water. Or maybe just get a nice bass boat with a big deck Smile

Hi Guys!

Ok! Some of you have Canoe and others Kayaks!
No Problem!

I've tried both and because I'm a big guy found both to be (for me) uncomfortable.

In a Canoe you have to Kneel to keep the center of gravity low or it gets tippsy.
In a Kayak, I felt cramped and in rough Wx you will get WET!

SO -> I built a wooden square-stern Guideboat, which took me 2 1/2 years to complete.
Got and bought the plans from a Canadian Ojibway Indian I met in my travels.

Boat:
Made of White Cedar and Black Walnut!
LOA 14 ft. 2 in.
42 in. wide
1 Main Keel and 2 Half Keels (These make it VERY STABLE)
Weight empty 83 lbs.
Load Capacity 850 lbs. (Definitely holds my big Butt! LOL)
Passenger capacity 3
Has 2 rowing stations using 7 1/2 ft. oars.
Also has 2 highback seats - one fore and one aft (Like sitting on a chair)
Will take up to a 4 hp outboard (I have a 3)

Since I'm a professional mariner I did the launching right!
Named her "Chasse Mare" -> Means Small Coaster.
Had my Wife christen her at 1st launch with appropriate launch words and a mini bottle of Champaigne.

NO Curses on My Baby!!!!!! (BIG SMILE!)

Best regards,
Seadog1

when i googled my canoe yesterday to find out how much it weighs, I found that Sportspal makes a whole lot of canoes and canoe style boats still to this day and they look like great boats. I didnt see any prices but you should check them out, if for no other reason then mine is from 73........

Peco,

If SkeeterJim see this post about the Hobie he would consider it BLASPHEMY..!

Take a second and look at this boat. (I am the deal for New England) www.cttwintrollerboats.com

If you would like to take my demo boat out fishing one day, let me know..

I think you would end up enjoying it a lot. Jim and I fish out of mine more than the Skeeters we both own.

We even took it to breakneck pond (I need a better means of getting it there).

On a single charge you can get well over 8 hours of fishing time.

I take the wife along with me on the twin troller, seats are great.

PM me if you want to take it fishing.

Ron

. . .but I want my wife to work a little bit when we're out on the water, even if she only pretends to paddle or pedal. She doesn't fish and I don't want her to get bored when we go out.

She may not be perfect for every situation, but I love The Other Woman. TurtleKiss doesn't like my little kayak, but I think that it's perfect for tiny rivers with challenging canoe launches like Bantam.

I'm considering Hobie's inflatable tandem with dual Mirage Drives. My wife could pedal while I fish! Razz
