Unfortunately, the technology in both of these units is so new and innovative that there's not much of a track record for either of them. I'm not partial to either, but the general consensus online, which is based on anecdotal data at best to be sure, seems to favor Humminbird over Lowrance as far as customer service goes. That said, I'm more impressed by the images I've seen online from the Lowrance than the Humminbird. I think I'd give the HDS 10 a try.

Hi Phil!
All this controversy on FF has gotten me to do further in-depth research.
Found the following differences in unit specifications to be of significant interest.
1. The more pixels a unit is capable of producing, the sharper and more distinctive a return signal will be displayed - This also depends on power output and usage of the unit.
2. The consensus is that a larger screen (5" or better) provides better viewing and speparation of targets.
3. Single beam is better for shallow water usage in freshwater lakes and ponds.
4. FF get better depth/return coverage in freshwater then saltwater due to salinity and water density.
5. Surprised to discover that almost all Grayscale units are whiteline capable (to determine bottom hardness) vs many Color units that can't.
Thus a Color unit has more power usage need then a Grayscale unit.
6. And Yes! Phil your right! -> The jury is still out on the side-scan capability of present units on the market, because the technology is so new and needs more time to be fully field evaluated.
Looks like I'm going to have to seriously reconsider some of the specific specs on the units I am interested in before I buy

but....after what I read on Bass Fishing Home Page...I would be scared a bit to get another one...just not sure how long it would take me to learn to navigate another brand.... all that I ask for is a LCD that can keep up with the bottom and not get confused in heavy grass....like my old flasher could...even the Zercom LCD flasher would keep up....LCD graphs, even in flasher mode can not...

Has anyone seen the new Humminbird 798ci HD SI Combo? It has both Down Imaging and HD Side Imaging. I Googled it and found a vendor that would sell it for $860. I need to figure out a way to mount its BIG transducer to my Hobie.

Did I open a can of worms. 
Flippy, I agree, the club is the best, but before I drop $2K I was looking for as much in-put I can get.
I am leaning to the Humminbird...
Peco, Where did you find that unit and price?

The 798ci HD SI Combo is "New for 2011!" On Humminbird's website:

I like that it has both of the newer HD scanning modes on it (i.e., Side Imaging and Down). The images from it that I've seen online look like the picture on an old black and white television. The clarity is amazing for a fish finder. Pricewise, it looks like an incredible bargain to me. If you think that you might be able to live without a monster screen, it would be worth a try. But my guess is that 900 and 1100 series HD SI Combo units are on the way for 2012.

OK. Placing the order soon with Reynolds Marine, (Thanks Tom & Chris).
Humminbird 898c SI (drivers seat), Humminbird 787c (bow mounted) both units will be interlinked. And a Minn Kota Talon.
Looking forward to using with the new equipment.

However I like to support the local guys as much as I can. I might pay a few bucks more, but in the long run it pays off.
