Monday I decided to sleep into the afternoon and then check on the latest NWS forecast. They were originally talking about 15mph NW winds until I saw they changed it to a steady 10mph east. I decided to head down to the striper spot and spend the rest of the evening there depending on the bite. Arrived around 4:30pm.

Setup was the Okuma/Penn Fierce and lure was the pearl grey shiner FLR-10. Retrieve was a slow steady.

First spot didn't produce anything after 10 or so casts.

Moved over to another spot and after 5 casts I set the hook. I felt lots of weight which meant do that second hook set. Once I did that second hook set it started running. After getting it in closer to shore, it took 2 more short runs before it quickly tired out.

Once I landed that striper and noticed the leak I covered still had a bit open, I decided to give both spots another 10 to 15 casts and if I don't get into much then head home seeing I already had the keeper and not wanting to be in the water much longer with the leak.

Never got another hit so hit the road around 5:30pm.

Got home and measured and weighed the catch, resulting in a new personal best CT keeper going 36" 17 pound 7 ounces. Amazing how a small 4" Rapala can still catch you a big fish like this!

I think the best part of the story is that he rode the bus home with that!

" Whenever I keep a legal striper I always make sure it's no bigger than 35" and that it's a chunky one.

I feel as if CT should go back to the reg they used to have bout 10 years ago."

Sound familiar?

Michael,

Out of curiosity, why do you only use Rapala lures?

Nice fish by the way! Thumbs Up

Go onto the General Discussion forum and look for the topic titled "ATTN Michael". That has the whole story with a number of replies showing how successful I've been with Rapala lures.

Definitely a nice fish Michael, but as a few others have said, this fishery is disappearing, watched a few people take stripers out of the ice this year at wethersfield cove and it just killed me. Certainly Michael taking this one fish is not doing much harm but something needs to be done or we will all be posting reports soon talking about trout! Sad Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad

Respect for using what works for you.

Have you caught any stripers over 30 pounds on a Rapala?
