Orvis Days offers fishing, nutrition talks starting Thursday

Orvis in Darien is hosting a series of free events during Orvis Days, a company-wide promotional week running from May 1 through 10. Along with promotions and discounts on many items in the store, the weekend events will feature activities, classes, seminars and informational booths on a range of topics from fishing to beekeeping to nutrition.

Saturday, May 3

The store’s fishing associates will lead casting clinics throughout the day.
From 11 to 1, a free lunch will be grilled that including salmon, hot dogs, burgers, chips and soda.

From 1 to 4, local health counselor and life coach, Rhonda Levye, will present a wellness seminar on Suffering from the Sugar Blues. This topic is for anyone who is constantly craving sweets and wants to understand why.

From 2:30 to 4, local beekeeper Mern Palmer-Smith, owner of Double Exposure in Darien, will discuss how the bee population impacts the environment. Find out why bees are the key to our food chain and so important.

Sunday, May 4

The store’s fishing associates will lead casting clinics throughout the day.

From 1 to 3, Walt Kirkman of the Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited will give a presentation on the effort of hatchery programs in local schools meant to keep local rivers productive. Jeff Yates, an Orvis associate and member of the Mianus Chapter will also present on local entomology, offering insights into the insect world in area rivers.

A Trout Unlimited membership drive will take place throughout the day.

From 3 to 4:30, Yates will present a seminar focused on the local trout streams: the Mianus, Norwalk, and Saugatuck Rivers. Guests will learn useful tactics, access points and what gear they’ll need to make the most of a fishing outing.
Saturday, May 10

From noon to 3, Levye will present Seasonal Foods and Where to Get Them, a discussion on how to select the best seasonal foods and where they can be found locally.

From 2 to 3:30, Orvis associate Bob Stoddard will give an in-depth talk on fishing Long Island Sound without a boat. The presentation, Fishing the Beaches of Fairfield County, provides information on access, gear and flies needed, and timing the tides for a productive day for striped bass and bluefish.
