Thought I'd post this here to see if you gurus have some suggestions!

I have an Ore Bed/Quarry near my parents house that I have fished over the years with 0 success. Completely 0. Everyone I've ever talked to says the same thing "Yeah, I've fished there, there's some really big fish in there." At which point I will ask "Yes, but did you catch anything?" and the response is "no".

Here's the deal, this is a very very deep open pit mine that filled with water, it is fed by a stream at one end, with an outlet at the other. Considerable flow comes up from springs at the bottom at well. The water is always cold. ALWAYS. Boats are not allowed on it and the shoreline is rather inhospitable, being a pit, there's steep edges right down to the water. The underwater, there is maybe 6 feet out from the shore in all directions where the water is maybe 3' deep, and then it drops off to unknown (but very deep) depths. The water also has very high mineral content, and as such always has that green tinge. There is very little vegitation, at least that I can see.

The lake is stocked with lake trout, and there are either pike or pickeral in the lake that are quite large from, I assume, munching on lake trout. There are some bass in the pond as well, and they usually are clinging to the side of an old beaver dam, seeking what little structure they can find. One side of the water has a very steep rocky cliff that goes straight into the water. I can access it to fish from, but it's tricky.

I'd love to be able to pull some lake trout, and or pike out of this thing, but I'm at a loss, I've thrown everything I can think at them.

So, Do you guys have any suggestions!?

Didn't mean to Lake X This post. There's no name for this pond that I'm aware of, but its just over the NYS border with Connecticut up in Lakeville. If anybody wants directions PM me. Don't even think about bringing a boat, but I'd reccomend a NYS license as its in a state park and the F&G officers are around. If you come to this place and catch fish, you will be my hero!

Light line like 4lb test and a tube or a 4 inch worm. Work it So slow that it hurts. Very Happy

yea...try grub baits in clear/smoke or watermeon with black flake

I'll give it a shot, you have any suggestions where the fish might reside? up on the shallow part? down in the depths? inlet/outlet/rocky side?

All the places you listed are a good place to try. Anything that breaks up the normal shape of the lake like rock piles. inlet or outlet currents, creek channels, lay downs, etc.

I would probably try a shaky-head worm setup on a jighead and fish very slowly. Try and work it along the ledge drop-offs.

Would that pit be in milerton ? If so used to get some nice rainbows out of there in late 80's,Then it just shut down. Went twice last year with no luck,saw a few monster pickeral.

Sevnseat, is there a possibility of going in there with a float tube? That would eliminate the inhospital shoreline. Just a thought.

no can do, nobody allowed in the water. haven't made it over there yet, tick heaven and I've kinda been avoiding that recently.

Hey Sevnseat, I would try very finesse techniques, small rubber worms(berkely 4 inch),grubs,small tubes,and some very small jigs use light weight even line,try 6 lb flourocarbon, or try to go with reaction,small swimbaits,some small pond 1/8 ounce spinnerbaits, I would start where that little stream comes in,hopefully those fish will stage there and feed a jig should do well, good luck.
