Chuck,

How do you like your Lowrance HDS8? Was talking to Tom down at Reynolds about wanting to get a couple HDS10's for my boat and he basically told me that Lowrance is having alot of problems with their Structure Scan series and to go with Hummingbird. Know anything about that? He also mentioned that Lowrance is being sued by Hummingbird for patent infringement, I'm like WTF!! First I heard about any of this. Antbody else who has the HDS series have any problems with their unit or have heard stories along this line? I don't think this was product favortism on Tom's part because he sells both at his marina.

The reigning BASS angler of the year switched from Lowrance to Humminbird this year based on performance and not sponsorship. One of my friends on the tour is still totally loyal to Lowrance and loves his units and won't ever switch unless it comes down to sponsorship $. I think either way you slice it you're getting a good product. Most of what you read says there seem to be more bugs with the Lowrance system, that their seals go bad early (though that is supposed to be fixed now), and that customer service has become a problem in the last year or two. I bought Hummingbird from Reynolds. Again, the Lowrance stuff is great...just do some reading (of which there's plenty online) and compare the two and make an informed decision. It's a lot of bucks! I had Lowrance on my last boat and the seal failed. I bought Hummingbird last year because it was the only side-imaging unit available when I bought. There's full disclosure...

I would have a hard time taking advice on the Lowrance units from a dealer right now. They haven't been using them long enough and the stock is so hard to get and the Humminbirds are readily available. As for the lawsuit the worse thing that could happen is Lowrance has to pay Humminbird loyalties but the technology isn't going anywhere. I do know that Humminbird put out an update to mimic Lowrance's color palate and Down Scan so read into that what you will.

If anything I would read up on BBC because these guys have used them both lot. :

I have had no problems with either of mine units HDS8 or HDS5. They work great no glitches or issues as of yet. My units are networked so I can read the structure scan on both and had no issue running them at the same time. The seal issue was with the HDS 5 and HDS 7 assembled prior to April of 2009 and has been fixed. I have always used Lowrance and never had a complaint or a reason to change. I have never used a Humminbird unit so I have no input on them.

I would try to see both on the water before you buy. I think it's going to come down to personal preference like Ford and Chevy... Very Happy
