Well SeaDog

A Nautical chart is a graphic representation of maritime area
they are based on Hydrographic surveys, that include north ,south, east, west
and depth of waters and the hieght of land....

A road map is a road map just shows streets ..highways ,directions and the difference I would say is one is water one is land

Hi BB!

Very good! -> But that's the technical description.

Simpler than that, and as taught at the Maritime Academies, is -> a Road Map tells you where you CAN GO.

A Nautical Chart tells you where you CAN NOT GO or SHOULD NOT BE Exclamation
Shallows, Reefs, Rocks, Land, Obstructions, and Anything Else that a vessel should NOT Encounter Exclamation

So if putting your vessel on unfarmiliar waters -> you should get a chart of that particular water with depths and obstructions indicated -> and if that is not available, to operate your vessel at the slowest speed possible to avoid damaging it -> watching for any color change in the water.

If water is highly discolored then the risk of damage or grounding is higher Exclamation

Know the water your on -> be observant -> if in doubt reduce speed substantially -> and Have all your safety gear aboard Exclamation

Best regards,
