Reading SeaDog1's post about using golden shiners to catch a 38 inch northern pike on the Housatonic River got me thinking about the merits of live versus artificial baits. I think that the primary advantage of live baits is that they attract fish to them, rather than having to be presented to fish like artificial baits.

I can't cover a lot of territory quickly in my little kayak and have started experimenting with trolling to increase my coverage. However, I'm considering giving live baits like shiners a try. What do you think?

imo, live bait vs artificial is a no brainer, lb is more effective, but kid of boring. I enjoy casting, the challenge of figuring out the pattern, the variety of choices artificials offer and exploring the whole body of water.

I use only artificial baits in fresh water. The 4 times i'm in the salt I use live bait. Some say the gulp stuff works as well as live bait in the fresh or salt

Justin - I agree that artificial baits are more of a challenge.

Stratos17 - I don't have an opinion on how well Gulp baits work, although I do think that they're smelly.

When I was leaving Stillwater Pond today, I spoke with a couple who were preparing to fish from the shore. They told me that she uses Gulp baits to fish for trout and he uses shiners to fish for largemouth bass.

Shiners aren't just for girls! Boys can use them, too. Right SeaDog1? Surprised

Hi Phil!

Well 50 ft. from my back door is my neighbors private small old spring fed fire pond, about 1/3 acre in size, and "Loooooooaded with Golden Shiners". (All sizes)

I bring my neighbors fresh fish and they let me have all the shiners I want.
Nice deal Exclamation

I either trap them or hook and line them for the fun of it.

Nice during the Ice-fishing season -> as I don't have to pay for shiners.

Pike are suckers for a nice big fat lively Goldie Exclamation

Best regards,
SeaDog1
