I had a hankerin' for some walleye, so I fished Batterson from 3:15 AM to 7:15 AM this morning. The forecast was for 5 mph winds, but the water was almost like glass. Unfortunately, I didn't get any walleye. Even worse, I almost didn't get anything at all. I hadn't been to Batterson in a while and wish that someone, anyone, had posted a report to let me know how weed infested it has become.

In an attempt to throw only other-than-wacky baits and lures, I left all of my worms/soft stick baits at home. I rigged up a spinnerbait and a shallow-diving Rapala before I got there. I fished the western shoreline and all I got with them was weeds. I also tried a popper, a buzzbait and a soft plastic frog on a swimming jig head. I got nothing. It wasn't until I was heading in and managed to wacky-rig a 4 inch chunk from a 6 inch Creme worm I found in the bottom of my kayak that I caught a tiny little rock bass.

I think I'm done with Batterson for the rest of the year, unless I figure out another way to fish heavy weed cover other than a soft plastic frog on a swimming jig head.

weeds are awesome. its where all the big bass hide out. if u can find a hole in the surface toss a spinner and rip it through. or just add a slide weight thing to the top of a tex style rigged worm and work it real slow bouncing ur tip to get through the crap

I couldn't see anything until 5:00 AM. I think I would have caught more fish if I would have had some Senkos or Dingers with me. I won't leave home without them from now on.

Weeds are a good thing for bass although too much is NOT! All the more reason for you to start fishing jigs and other weighted baits like creature baits and tubes. Just drop them through the weed mats as that is where they consider to be their safe zone and ambush spots.

I just happened to catch a spot about tube fishing on Versus this morning. The guy said they're the best bait ever for catching smallmouth bass.

That is true. Smallmouths go wild for tube baits and they fight so much better than the LMB's.
