I went fishing for black crappie with asianfisher (aka Billy) at Spring Pond from noon to 6:00 pm. It was overcast with a steady five to 10 mile per hour south breeze, but the air was warm, so no jackets were required. For the most part, we used 1/16 to 1/8 ounce jigheads with chartreuse grub tails, although Billy experimented with other colors a bit. We suspended the jigs eight to 24 inches under stick bobbers. We killed them. Most of the crappie were caught within five feet of the shore off of both islands and the middle of the west shore. I finally found out why they're called black crappie. I've always wondered, because the crappie that I had caught in the past were mostly green. Today, a lot of the crappie that we pulled up were mostly black and a dark teal blue. Billy got distracted by some bedding largemouth bass in the shallows of the northwest corner and caught two of them by swimming a bronze hard stickbait (e.g., floating Rapala) over the beds. The bigger of the two was two pounds, 12 ounces. I also got a small keeper bass on the jig. We ended up keeping 27 crappie. we could have had more if we hadn't spent a lot of time just venturing around the entire pond. Most of the crappie were 12 inches long, although Billy got one 14 inch lunker. I filleted eight of them after I got home for dinner tonight. I'm getting hungry already. Very Happy

Good for both of you!
Spring Crappie fishing is fun because the action is fast. Thumbs Up

Phil? Did you try that Sweet Vermouth trick I mentioned to you before cooking?

Hey, John. Did you end up getting any bigger largemouth bass? I think that the three bass Billy and I pulled up were all skinny males.

Oh, and my dinner tonight was crappie:

It was absolutely delicious. Very Happy

You know that I ate it with rice, Ian! Although Billy would say that we asians should steam our fish and not cook it the way that white people do. Surprised

Well if your dinner tonight was crappie, maybe you should have cooked it differently! Laughing

Nice fish guys!

BassRican - Fishing for crappie with grub jigs is almost as much fun as fishing for white perch. And it's a lot closer to home for me.

That's what I like about you, Billy. Like me, you enjoy fishing, whatever the fish; largemouth bass, northern pike, steelhead trout, salmon, heck, even sunnies. Very Happy

I'm tempted to head out into the rain today. Fishface (aka Tim) landed a 13-1/2 inch walleye at Batterson Park Pond yesterday evening. I wanna get me some! Very Happy
