I haven't seen one since I lived in queens, ny over 15 yrs. ago. Over the past two months, i've found two of them hanging out on the hood of my truck

I was out side in the night taking my dog out to go to the bathroom just wanted to take a look at my pool pump, looked up and it scared the living daylights out of me when it looked at me face to face on the side of my pool i went screaming thinking it was a snake with arms. i got a flashlight and looked for it and saw this 6 inch praying mantis on the side of my pool trying to catch moths and then it flew into my face and i went running and screaming into the house and looked in the mirror top see it peacefully sitting on my head kind of sifting my hair looking for bugs. It was strange i went outside and it flew off my head.

I was surprised when my daughter told me that the State Insect of Connecticut is the European or "Praying" Mantis. It's actually a non-native insect species. She'd be glad that you released it unharmed.
