When do the white perch start running? I haven't caught one since I was a kid. I used to fish for them with my grandfather. Wouldn't mind fishing for them again

Hi,

They should be starting now thru March.
Hope the lack of spring run-off doesn't affect the run, as that is what triggers it.

How can I catch a white perch there? Never caught one myself. My sister caught a few at Bantam on a phoebe while me and her boyfriend got skunked trying for pike.

AF,

Very easy to catch. I get them all the time when Shad fishing. Willow leaf is what I use.

Hit the shallow coves off of the Connecticut. If you like to chuck bait, they love nightcrawlers and, especially, grass shrimp. A small jig works, too, but there's a technique to fishing it.

Areas along the Housy from Route 8 down to Sikorsky can produce PHS

Actually, it's rising temperatures that stimulate spawning, not spring run-off.

OK?

And what causes spring run-off if not rising temps which thaws the ground and melts snow -> add spring rains to this equation also ! Surprised

Rise in water level + flows are also critical for many types of migrating fish to reach spawning areas. (Stripers - Herring - Shad - Salmon - etc.)

Rationalize all you want, Stephen, but with the lack of precipitation we've had this Winter, there won't be much of a run-off and the white perch will still spawn.

Hi Phil,

Never said they wouldn't -> Nature and the natural spawning instincts will still come into play.

The question is -> spawning runs can be impacted many ways by may different enviormental differences.

This has been found to be true when migrating fish can't reach traditional spawning areas.
Man-made dams and lack of water + flow is just one example.

I just brought the question up as an FYI because of this winters unusual Wx ...Not as a fact ..... as I'm not a fisheries biologist.
