Recently while I was fishing a pond along a river, I caught a brown trout in an area where I could see them feeding on insects.

As I'm filleting it and look in its stomach, I see many of 1 certain insect.

What would be the current hatch that the trout are feeding on in rivers?

Hi M,

Yup! Most likely winter caddis - it's that time of year for them.

Well, what was it?

Troutnut.com is a great website with some incredible images of the aquatic insects, http://www.troutnut.com/common-names

From that website Passinthru, I could tell it was one of the smaller black caddisflies like the American Grannom. Had some darker yellow to it too like the gold speckled winged.
