My daughter Kaleigh and I joined a friend and our friends son Jared on the youth hunt this past Saturday and for the long version you can ready my blog post about it here: http://passinthruoutdoors.blogspot.com/2012/04/2012-ct-youth-turkey-hunt-success.html

For the short version.

Our scouting has shown that the farm has plenty of legal birds to shoot as it is loaded with Jakes and 3 mature toms. My daughter has been watching them for weeks and made a decision to not shoot a Jake, she took one last year and wanted a mature Tom, actually she wanted one bigger then her brother's birds. A doable task, but nothing like putting the pressure on me. We were close enough to Jared to hear him shooting not long after fly down and we could catch a glimpse of a strutting bird in the field, but not close enough to hear JF2 calling or see the action in front of Jared.

Jared scored his First, Second and Third turkey of his short turkey hunting career (his first turkey hunt ever) early Saturday and was tagged out and home by 7:30am.

Twice during the hunt Kaleigh had opportunities to shoot a Jake but stuck to her guns and waited them out in hopes of one of the mature birds we'd been seeing. Well, we never got a look at one or a chance to work one, but they were there and we had loads of fun watching, taping and taking pictures of those knuckle head Jakes.

Here is a picture of one of the Tom's (aka Fingers) Kaleigh was hoping would show up. She took his picture on Sunday after the youth hunt.

Some video of the Jakes being Jakes as they huddle around our decoy just 15 yards from our blind.

Seriously? Going to argue about that?. . .

Every group of hunters I know around, and it's way more than you know, refer to them as thunder chickens.

You even see it on TV from the big names in hunting calling them that.

And FYI there's turkey calls and decoys named after "thunder chicken".

Just STFU, seriously. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Hi,

No! Just said that Ruffed Grouse have held that particular title long before someone decided to call a turkey the same.

It's a bonified historic fact .... and long before you or I where born and picked up our 1st gun.

My grandfather, 2 uncles, and many friends/guides in Vt. and N.H. all called them that.

Cheech! Sensitive aren't you! Shocked

I can always go for a whole stick of kielbasa with some ham on the side. Start it off with the traditional Slovak mushroom soup!

1/2 Slovak with a bit of Polish in with it

Make sure you go to your local Polska, Hungarian, or Slovak store to get the best imports!

I can taste that sauerkraut juice in the broth!
