Recently while fishing the Pequonnock River at Beardsley Park I've seen some small fish hanging around sandy and muddy areas closer to the shoreline and near where a deeper pool meets shallow rocky rapids. No bigger than 2 inches and they take off pretty fast when they get spooked.

I looked in my Peterson's Field Guide and looked to me like darters. Do we get darters hanging around shallower areas of rivers and streams where it's sandy or muddy?

Just checked again and found it to be the tessellated darter. Says it likes to hang out around gravelly and muddy shoreline areas of rivers and creeks. Found in our region.
