I had the day off, so I got got up early and headed down the Mattabessett river Cromwell launch with my kayak.
I start fishing around 6:30 and finished up around 12:30.

For the first couple of hours, the action was steady and I landed a few small bass on an orange buzz bait. Then I got this bass about 18 inches on the buzz bait.

Not long after that, I got this 27 inch pike

A few minutes later, another pike about 25 inches on the buzz bait

I started switching between a baby brush hog and the buzz bait when I got this 17 inch bass on the brush hog

I started heading back to the launch when I got this bass just under 18 inches on a jig with a craw trailer.

I ended up catching quite a few bass and a few pike, it was great to get a few nice size ones in the mix.

Great job getting on the fish, I missing having a yak, you can sneak right up on them without spooking.

Great report and nice looking fish. Where is the launch if you don't mind me asking? Also, how far upstream did you paddle?

Nice report. Haven't fished back in there all season, but it's a great river.

The launch is next to the Dunkin Donuts in Cromwell, I think it'soff of Shunpike Rd. I just worked my way downstream from there. I went as far as where the Coginchaug river goes into the Mattabessett.

I've put my canoe in there. For guys not familiar, you have to carry down some steps to the water. If you have a boat too large to carry, you'll have to put in above or below, Rocky Hill (free again in a few more weeks) or Haddam Meadow), or across the river in Portland. I think it's Yankee Marina that does a pay launch????

I launch at Portland Boat Works which is right next door for the most part. For trailered boats it's $15.
