Took the kids out on the Black Hawk since Capt. Greg was planning on some bottom fishing over off Montauk. We had a non-stop black bass bite the entire trip, with lots of shorts but bass up to 8lbs. mixed in. While my daughter just hung out and played with Flounder (the lab), Danny and I fished. I started with two rods, but quickly realized as fast as I was baiting and dropping that Danny was getting picked clean. I decided to go back to one rod, and over the next few hours we landed 43 bass (Danny likes to keep an official tally), a few porgy and lost quite a few on the way up (usually handing him off the rod). All told, we had beautiful weather, great times and came back with a cooler of fillets. There was one minor mishap, which I ended up with on video.

Still down there. Thought I had it as I began to reel in, but had just been hit by a decent fish. Oh well, just a story we will laugh about for a long time.

Speaking of the Blackhawk...
I am heading out on Saturday.. First time on this boat. I usually go on the Mijoy or Helcat.

Couple of questions for those of you who have been on it.

Do coolers fit underneath the benches?

Where do most of you put the fish after you catch it? A bag or cooler?

Do you board the boat when you get there or have to wait and everyone boards together? If you all board together, how do I try and get a spot in the back? get there early and stand in a line?

Thanks. I appreciate your responses.

Get there EARLY to get a spot. Generally guys line up their gear in order of arrival. It does pay to fish regularly and treat the mates well. I used to do several night bass trips a season. I usually just leave my fish cooler in the car. The day trips will be busy, just as on any party boat, and tangles or lost fish are inevitable. That being said, Danny and I spent the whole trip the other day tangle free by just using a little common sense and paying attention to what was happening around us. With the new boat, Greg has been running to Montauk and block, so I expect some trips well into the late months and maybe some winter cod. You'll hear the pros and cons of any party boat, but having fished the Mijoy and chartered large group trips with the Sunbeam Fleet in the past, I stick to the BH. Good Luck!!!
