A little less milk now will buy a whole lot later when it's really needed and the rods and reels I listed aren't much more than the bargain basement garbage.

A 7 foot 1 piece surf rod I've totally fallen in love with is the Star Rods Aerial Surf Jetty. It's light and powerful with very fast action. It sets the hook on its own most of the time and can get a 2 ounce custom wooden popper way out there.

I've let other casters and smart chummers I know at Seaside get a feeling for it and they are amazed. 1 guy even said he'll take it in exchange for his 1 piece 7 foot Tsunami Trophy.

I paid about $85 for it combined with the shipping from a well known seller online. It comes with a 5 year limited manufacturer's warranty.

This is 1 of those rods you can easily land a 40" striper with while using 30 pound braid and have no trouble getting a 1/2 ounce topwater out there with 14 pound braid.

I started fishing few years back and have been using Abu Garcia Black Max ($60-70 bucks). We have a casting and spinning rod.

My go to one is the casting rod.....it's been great. Kids use the spinning rod. My son also bought some cheapo spinning rod from Walmart and it's been fine. Just had to put better line on it, that's all.

I did see a really sweet Octa Abu Garcia at Dicks few weeks back for like $130, looked really sweet and all.....but said to myself "meh, mine is fine".
