I'm looking to start catching some golden pond shiners. Where do I need to start looking. Back bays rivers etc? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Drop a worm on the bottom of some small brook, tiny pond, or marshland. Small brooks and marshland are usually the best.

Get a minnow trap stuff a bunch of worms in a stocking and weigh it down. I usually use deep spots under falls. Some ponds have shiners to but you have to know which ones the ones I used to know are all dry. But club ponds are a really good source.
