I found an Ugly Stik in my house that I use to use a long time ago for Bass and I'd like to start using it again but I feel that the reel I have on it doesn't fit it too well. It kind of weighs the rod down. I was wondering if anyone can give me suggestions as to what kind of after-market reel I can put on it but something that isn't going to break the bank. I'll be using it strictly for fishing lakes for bass and what not. Are you near any sporting good stores?
I picked up a decent Okuma real for $30 last year and it still is working fine.

Yes, I'm right near a Dick's and Sports Authority.
I guess my real question is, how do you determine what size and other details to look for for this rod? I plan on using 8 pound test which I'm assuming is good for a Bass pole?

8lb - 10lb as long as you have a smooth drag
Depending on the real sizes are different for example one brand may have size 20 30 50
while others may have 5200 6200 etc
I would use a size "30"

I'd get a size 2500 Shimano spinning reel and put 50 pound PowerPro braid on it. But that's just me.

I just read some reviews on these reels and they are all great. My next question: do I get the rear drag model or the front drag model? What is the difference?

I like the front drag for aesthetic purposes
I am sure theres a difference when it comes down to fixing them etc...

Peco, do you really use 50 lb braid for bass? Just curious, I use 40 lb for striped bass in the strong current of the river. I know yoiur dealing with ripping through weeds and such but 50, wow.

Yeap, one of my setups always has 50 pound test braided line on it, preferably PowerPro. I use it for frogging. I lost a BIG largemouth bass on Lake Okeechobee in February when I set the hook while frogging with 20 pound braid. Never again. Plus, it's hard to clear snags from a kayak and I can straighten out a snagged Gamakatsu Number 4 Octopus Circle Hook when it's tied to 50 pound braid. But one of my setups also always has 12 pound test fluorocarbon line on it, preferably P-Line Fluoroclear. If I had to choose just one line, though, I'd go with the 50 pound braid.  . You never know when you're going to hook into a 500 pound halibut!

I went to three stores and all of them were sold out of Shimano Sienna 2500FD. I'll wait for them to stock up. Must be a pretty popular reel
