None had eggs in them. The eggs taste great! Bowhunter095 is correct on how to id the females. The females have longer spikes, so a smaller looking female may measure 5 inches and be a keeper! |
I wouldn't speak of keeping egg bearing crabs publicly |
I like blue crab eggs, too. I think the prohibition on taking egg bearing females refers to those visibly bearing eggs. I've only had blue crab eggs that were hidden inside the crab's shell. Here's the regulation as stated in the 2012 Connecticut Angler's Guide:
Quote: | BLUE CRAB
For personal use/not for sale: No license required.
Legal Blue Crab Capture Methods:
•Scoop Net, Hand Line, Dip Net, Trot Line
•Star Crab Trap (or similar device)
•Circular Topless Trap (not exceeding 26″ in diameter)
•Semi-Circular Cylindrical Trap (12″ or less in diameter)
Open Season
May 1–November 30.
Minimum Shell Width: (Spike Tip to Spike Tip)
•5″ hard shell crabs
•3½” soft shell crabs
Prohibited
•Possession of uncooked blue crab meat without the body shell attached.
•Possession of more than 2 claws per body.
•Possession of egg bearing females.
Required
All devices must be attended at all times. |

I guess I didnt make myself clear. I was referring to eggs INSIDE the crab. I've only caught one female with eggs on the outside, and in the water she went. Would never think of it. _________________ When in doubt, rip their lips out! |

Anoited, the claws are a give away, and so is the pattern on the underside of the crab. The male has an obelisk shape, a long and pointy (har har) looking shape on the apron while the female is generally rounded. Male keepers will have more meet than a female, in general. I will be teaching a crabbing class for the DEEP CARE Program in Stratford in a few weeks if you want to know more! |
